Kate Bush

Kate Bush is someone that takes a couple of tries to like and to appreciate, but even before I find myself repeating her songs, I already am in love with her. Because she's wonderfully weird... and weirdly wonderful. Her voice is playful yet seductive, and has incredible range-signed by EMI Records by age 16, Kate Bush was discovered by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour after he heard her 50+songs demo-tape. She reconstructed the music-video with passive seduction so the viewer isn't necessarily sure what exactly is going on (it helps that she was trained in dance and mime). Either way, I have to hijack what someone has already said about the lovely, whimsical and absolutely brilliant artist: "before there was Lady Gaga, there was Kate Bush."

Spirit Spine

In Olympic-land, the younger the athlete, the more talented they seem to be. Spirit Spine is no exception. Joseph Denny, aka Spirit Spine, stands as a (young) God among Men, for this 19 year old has been breaking through blahgs with his debut single Crashers (Highs and Lows). If you are a fan of Panda Bear's solo stuff and psychedelic Cali/new-wave, Spirit Spine will woo you to intergalactic beaches. If age doesn't impress, his producing skills will, since he's made his music using Garage Band. You can read more about Spirit Spine and pre-order Crashers (Highs and Lows) from Rough Trade.

Joanna Newsom in Montreal

Joanna Newsom will be performing in Montreal March 14th & 15th, and BOY am I excited. This lovely lady's fairy-tale approach to folk music is refreshingly avant-garde, and recalls the poetic way artists wrote music in the 1960's and '70's. Drag City has been releasing little morsels from Joanna Newsom's new album, Have One On Me, for the past three weeks, where you can also pre-order it through the website (it officially comes out February 23rd). Joanna Newsom has embodied and honed in on something special that has been absent in music these past years, and this young and talented artist (for she is as much a poet as she is a harpist and vocalist) has still so much more to share from her magical world. Still not convinced? Hear for yourself:

So, new blahg!

Hey, it's my new blog guys (to all two of you who are reading this) (hey mom and dad). I'd like to kick things off with a song, since this place will most likely consist of music (old & new), photos, and a virtual laundry list of tid-bits that entertain me at the moment. So, let's get this party started!
